Fishing Report 16 Oct

Bears_at_Eglin_006__Large_.jpgThe front was due in according to the Weather Channel last Friday so I knew that my fishing plans were doomed to be scrubbed for the next few days. The wind was getting pretty sporty so I decided to leave my boat parked in the front yard and try some wade fishing. I had some luck earlier in the week fishing from my boat at Ben's Lake on Eglin Main Base. I figured on fishing the cut where the lake enters the bay. I tried a couple of patterns that I knew would work if the fish were in there. After about three dozen cast and no takers the wind had increased to about 15 or 20 out of the north I gave up and went back to the truck. I headed toward the Officers Club to get out from the little patch of woods when I came upon what you see in the attached Pictures.

East Bay Fish Kill

I passed this on at the meeting but every member of the club, naturally, was not present. So here goes again. Last Wednesday me and a couple of other guys (Spinfishermen) went to West Bay. We boated a couple of Reds and three Specks. I was lucky enough to get one of each on a chartreuse and white Seaducer. The primary reason for this post is to make all the readers aware that there were many dead Menhaden floating all over the bay and into the river. It didn't appear to be a red tide present but whatever was killing them it was potent.

Inshore Fishing

The inshore fishing has been hot. The guides have been catching Sail Fish and one fisheremen at the destin harbor said there were reports of blackfin tuna and Mahi Mahi being caught. So my friend and I took to the seas in search of Tuna and Sailfish.  The species being caught inshore  include Blackfin tuna, Sail Fish, Kings, Spanish, Mahimahi, Triple tail, Bonita, Large ladyfish, Bluefish just to name a few.  After going out the past 2 weekends chasing the Sail Fish, I went armed for big fish with 10 and 12 wt rods with wire leader on one and 60lb bitetippet on the other.  My friend Capt Doug Richards of Lightenup Charters and i went to target primarily  the Sailfish to try and be the one of the first to catch a sail fish on the fly inshore but we were unable to locate them.

I love the beach this time of year

The last week and a half have been from outstanding to very good.

I've had days on the beach where there were so many blues and ladys you just had to cast out and hook up, on slower days,

I had to look for them,  this am was one of those days I live for,  there was a mixed bag of ladys, blues, kings, reds, hardtail and lots of bait rite on the beach.  I managed to land over 30 fish with ladys, blues, hardtail, lost a king, and saw a huge red.

I started with surf candy and went to crease fly.  I worked up such a lather I was played out after 3 hrs of none stop action.
I love the beach this time of year.  Len
